You won’t see more Australian spider season 2 in the Australian cinema, because there won’t be more Australian Spider season 2.
“There’s no reason to, it’s not the right thing to do,” says producer Michael Fassbender, who co-wrote the first season.
It was, after all, the first Australian film ever made, and a film that saw audiences on both sides of the Tasmanian border.
So why did it feel like the right time to pull out the curtain?
“We knew there would be a backlash,” Fassbnaw explains.
There were protests and a petition and the Australian Film Institute decided to remove the film from cinemas.
The response to the film was so overwhelming, it took a full day to get it back on the cinema screens, according to Fassbaw.
Fassbender explains that while the backlash was fierce, the producers also felt it was necessary to keep the show alive, and keep the viewers coming back.
He says it’s a shame that there’s no Australian version of the original series of the same name.
“[The producers] thought they could get away with that, but it’s so much more complex than that.
You have to deal with the fact that there are Australian actors in it, the Australian cinemas, the audience.
So you have to be able to deal both with the audience and the actor, because otherwise, you’re in trouble.”
What happens next for the show’s producers is unknown, but the producers say they’ll be back for season 3, and are hoping to make more episodes.
